How to prepare for IIT-JEE?
The Joint Entrance Examination ( JEE Advanced) 2019 is conducted by the IITs. The performance of a candidate in this examination will form the basis for admission to the Bachelor’s, Integrated Master’s and Dual Degree programs (entry at the 10+2 level) in all the IITs.
Understanding the Structure of the Examinations
The IIT-JEE Advanced is structured differently than the main exam. The advanced exam covers the same three topics: Physics, Chemical, and Mathematics. However, unlike the main exam, the advanced exam is divided into two three-hour long papers, each divided into three sections (one for each topic).
Although the Structure for examinations is not fixed students can refer to the patterns of previous year question paper to have a vague idea of how the JEE Advanced Examinations are conducted. As a matter of fact, JEE Advanced Papers are Full of Surprises! So, brace yourselves because the journey wouldn’t be cakewalk that’s for sure and use reference books.
So, now referring to the previous year JEE ADVANCED Paper,
There are two 3-Hour Papers. Each Paper having three sections for each subject and further divided to have more sub-sections for having different types of questions.
Considering each sub-section of a section. There are usually three sub-sections.
- The first sub-section usually contains MCQ questions with single option correct or more than one options correct. This section usually has negative marking.
- The second sub-section can be either a match the sections questions or a paragraph type question. Here too, there is always a possibility that more than one options can be correct and negative marking may or may not be present.
- The third sub-section usually had integer type questions, where the answers were in the form of a single digit ranging from 0-9. But, in recent papers, we have seen this section is converted into a numerical type where the answer can be any number or any decimal number. There is usually error range for these questions ranging up to two decimal places from the actual answer. This section generally does not have negative marking but there’s always a possibility that the Examination Governing Body can introduce negative marking even in this section.
This distribution given is solely based on the analysis of the previous year question papers. Team Scholr is not responsible for any discrepancies related to the question paper pattern with regards to above-mentioned analysis.
There is no standard paper pattern for JEE Advanced Examinations. The JEE Advanced Governing Body may use a system of Permutation and Combination of the above-mentioned question type for drafting the Paper-I and Paper-II for JEE Advanced.
Now, since we have a vague idea of the structure of the examination, let’s move to the syllabus of the examinations. It is very important the student knows in-outs of the syllabus as skipping a single concept can result in a drop of more than 100 ranks or maybe more than that (this value is totally empirical). And on the contrary, the student should not study concepts which are not part of syllabus because its simply time consuming and doesn’t yield immediate benefit (for the future, maybe but definitely not for now.)
There are always mild changes in syllabus with successive years, so the student needs to make sure that he/she is not ignorant about such details.
Now, the students need to be acquainted with current news affiliated to PCM, since the Governing Body loves asking questions with respect to current trends.
For e.g.: During the controversies due to the usage of Monosodium Glutamate, there was a question asked in which students needed to have an about the structure of MSG.
Every student knows his/her capabilities to a certain extent. When you’re deciding to prepare for JEE the person should have a good assumption of his/her academic expertise and set a certain target for getting into selected IITs and should select their target rank and preferable branches because without it the preparation would not be streamlined and the student would suffer from immense psychological pressure because of not selecting proper targets.

Now, coming to the
- Time-Management: Time-Management is the fundament recipe for clearing JEE or anything in life. The student needs to adopt a proper time-management method in which he doesn’t even miss out on his daily recreational activities and also his academics. They need to take proper time from their schedule for self-study and not just allot all the time to coaching classes and college. It is observed that students often sacrifice their social life for preparing for JEE, which is not a healthy practice but considering the competition we cannot even disregard. So, it is the upon the discretion of the students considering their intellectual capabilities to how they manage, sacrifice their recreational activities and their academics.
- Study Plan: It is extremely essential that the student formulates a study plan which improves and covers all areas of his/her weaknesses and also play a role in polishing his/her strong points. We would later be covering the priority-based topics for JEE.
- Practice, Practise, Practise !!- Practice is the key to clearing JEE. More questions you’re exposed the better. IIT-JEE questions are never straight-forward, they are extremely conceptual and the students need extreme expertise for solving the problem or else he/she would suffer from the consequences of negative marking.
- Tests: The students need to appear for tests consistently as they are an important tool for evaluation. The important point to note that is it fully doesn’t depend on how much you study but how well you perform during your examinations. It can be said your scores depend 30% on what have you studied and 70% on how well you perform in your examinations. So, you can always opt for test-series from various coaching centers to get an idea of how you stand nationwide. You usually get an approximate rank. You should also take timed tests at home while solving papers because without the time-constraints students tend to develop a slack attitude and take more time for solving a problem than they should take.
- Coaching Classes: This upon the discretion of the student. The students can check for the best coaching classes in their vicinity and make sure they spend the least time in commuting. The students may also opt for hostel-based coaching centers as the preparation becomes more rigorous and streamlined. Coaching Classes, generally fill the void what traditional schooling system is unable to fulfill and provides an additional academic push.
Now coming to the aspect of reference books, there are numerous reference books available in the market which often puts the students in dilemma.
So, we present you the reference books which should be preferable.
Firstly, the student needs to be extremely thorough with NCERT Textbooks and need to the solve each and every problem at least once. This gives the students a basic idea of how to implement the concepts. Moreover, NCERT is inexpensive, have a lucid language and cover nearly the entire syllabus and thus studying these textbooks puts the students in a favorable for IIT-JEE Mains and Advance.

Tips according to Subjects
Acing an exam largely boils down to whether you had planned the schedule in the right way. Determining your approach is as crucial as the process of actually studying. The chapters for JEE are mentioned in a decreasing priority order, which means the ones at the top have the highest priority and priority level decreases as you go through the list.
Physics requires you to have a strong hold on concepts. Once the concepts have been mastered, they are very easy to retain. Some chapters for JEE in physics have a heavy weightage in the exams. Here’s the priority sequence you can follow chapter-wise.
Mechanics is probably the most important topic any engineer should know. This invariably makes it the most important part of the paper. Indeed, the bulk of questions in JEE are either directly mechanics questions or require you to have considerable skill to solve compound problems.
Rotational Mechanics is the most important topic in mechanics. But in order to master that the student needs to have considerable expertise with the previous chapters.
Any JEE level mechanics problem can be solved by a combination of one or more of these:
- Newton’s laws
- Work energy theorem
- Law of conservation of energy
- Law of conservation of momentum (linear/angular)
- Equation of continuity
- Bernoulli’s theorem
These are probably the most important chapters for JEE and have applications in other chapters for JEE Physics too.
Also, do not ignore the chapter on elasticity.
Electricity and magnetism
This is another big section of JEE and one of the most important chapters for JEE. A lot of questions are asked from the applications of Coulomb’s law and Capacitance. Stick to the JEE syllabus because this topic is diverse. Don’t be scared of complex circuits and try to use the fundamentals to reduce complicated circuits to simpler ones. Use Kirchhoff’s laws, series-parallel reduction, and such tricks. Do not ignore the theoretical aspects of the topic. There are quite a large number of standard formulae in electrostatics and magnetostatics. Make sure to remember them all (with directions involved) because you won’t have enough time to derive standard results on D-day. Motional EMF is also one of the most asked topics and should be among the top priority chapters for JEE, so ensure that you practice ample of questions from it.
This chapter covers a big chunk of the paper too. Since the topics are diverse, don’t be surprised to see a question, which is a mix of calorimetry with the laws of thermodynamics. Familiarize yourself with calculations of work, internal energy and heat in various processes.
Fluids and waves and sound
A lot of questions are asked from waves and sound; the most common ones are from Doppler Effect. Practice sample questions from fluid mechanics as well.
JEE contains questions involving error analysis pertaining to potentiometer-related experiments, so make sure to understand them.
This chapter isn’t as difficult as it seems; it is indeed it is one of the easiest topics for JEE. Practice many questions, and you’ll be able to master it. Do not ignore Huygens’s principles.
It is mostly theoretical; in this, the focus should be on understanding the nuances of Bohr’s model. The common formulae should be memorized.
One must understand that it’s very important to read as much as possible in order to learn chemistry and chemical bonding questions. Also, revision is crucial as there’s a possibility of forgetting things. Take chemistry as seriously as mathematics and physics. Do not ignore this subject just because you feel chemistry is purely “cramming.”
Weightage is nearly equally distributed in the three streams of chemistry. It is important not to skip any topic from Inorganic Chemistry as the subject is highly scoring.
Chemical Equilibrium and Ionic Equilibrium are the most important topics in Physical Chemistry but in order to master that you need to have an excellent expertise in Mole Concept and Volumetric Analysis.
The most important and central concept in physical chemistry is the mole concept, which lies at the heart of the subject. Hence, it is indeed one of the most important and basic chapters for JEE chemistry. You should read this chapter thoroughly to gain a firm command over the entire chemistry subject. It is also important to understand the application of mole concept to various types of reactions, especially redox reactions. Several questions of physical chemistry in competitive examinations like JEE Main and JEE Advanced can be solved easily if one is well-versed with the mole concept.
Electrochemistry is also an important topic
This is the only chapter whose contents do not seem to have a direct correlation to Mole Concept. Questions from Atomic Structure are regularly asked in JEE.
The rest of physical chemistry is essentially derived from mole concept. Other concepts like Chemical Thermodynamics, Chemical Bonding, Chemical equilibrium examples, Chemical Kinetics, Gaseous, etc. have nearly equal weightage. So, they can be revised in any order, but remember that a few questions are guaranteed to come from this section. Student needs have a basic idea of Surface Chemistry and Nuclear Chemistry.
Nomenclature is the most basic concept in organic chemistry, it is essential that the student has an excellent mastery over it.
General Organic Chemistry and Isomerism:
The key to understanding the entire organic chemistry is being thorough with the general organic chemistry section – electrophiles, nucleophiles, types of reaction, acidity, basicity, etc. The remaining organic chemistry is just the application part.
A large part of organic chemistry consists of the standard “named” reactions and students are expected to know these reactions along with the mechanisms. It is always good to know the mechanism of a specific reaction so that you can solve a similar new problem. Solomon and Fryhle’s Organic Chemistry is one of the best books for learning organic chemistry besides other available books.
The Student needs to gain mastery over reaction mechanics to proceed with organic chemistry as the mechanism is very important for the entire chemistry. This is the part of the organic chemistry where things don’t need to be mugged up and can be understood and analyzed as JEE usually twists the questions on the basis of analysis.
Aldehydes and Ketones are very important chapters of Organic Chemistry. Major chunk is asked from this chapter.
Another important aspect of organic chemistry is the portion of organic synthesis, which involves writing a sequence of steps to synthesize a given compound from a given set of reagents with as little effort as possible. Quite a few problems of organic chemistry in the competitive examinations are based on organic synthesis where the students are expected to identify the missing reagents/chemicals in a specific step of the synthesis. So, it becomes important to be clear with all the steps of mechanism in the reaction.
Please do not miss out on Biomolecules as it is the simplest and very scoring.
All of Inorganic Chemistry is on equal footing. No chapter can be considered ‘Unimportant.’
There are a large number of compounds, and you are expected to know about them (methods of preparation, chemical reactions, uses, etc.). So, it’s a good idea to not divert much from the syllabus.
Many questions of inorganic chemistry are asked from p-block elements, and it becomes important to understand this chapter rather than just cramming it. A good knowledge of periodic table and the trends in the properties of atoms (ionization potential, atomic radius, electronegativity, electron affinity, the electrode potential) will help you to understand the reactions.
For mathematics, you need rigorous practice. The more problems you will solve, the better will be your speed and accuracy.
The mathematics syllabus for JEE broadly consists of the following topics:
- Differential Calculus
- Integral Calculus
- Coordinate Geometry
The topics for preparation of Mathematics for JEE Main & Advanced should be chosen wisely in order to ensure that pre-requisites for each topic are met completely. Hence, even though the priority of differential and integral calculus is undoubtedly the highest among any other chapter, calculus needs to be done after trigonometry and algebra.
Calculus includes chapters on functions, limits, continuity, differentiability, differentiation, application of derivatives, integration, definite integrals and differential equations. Each of the above topics is important, and the calculus section covers around a third of the paper. So, you must be well-versed in every standard formula and technique used in calculus.
This topic is usually taught in high school as well, so students are already familiar with the basic concepts of the slope, the equation of a line, etc. Solving plenty of problems (subjective as well as objective) from geometry helps in scoring better in JEE.
Vectors (and 3D Geometry)
Having done the coordinate geometry portion, most of you will find the 3D geometry portion relatively hassle-free and do well in this section. It’s primarily easy-breezy because JEE contains numerous problems pertaining to vectors that require standard formulae as in the case of a parallelepiped, etc.
Algebra questions in JEE are a bit hard, and most students struggle with the chapters on permutations and combinations and complex numbers. However, practice is the key. The chapter on complex numbers greatly depends on the coordinate geometry portion. At times, a hard question from complex numbers can be solved if one can smartly correlate it to a coordinate geometry problem.
The formulae of trigonometry appear everywhere in JEE Mathematics exam paper. Very few questions are purely based on trigonometry, but there are always questions that involve standard trigonometric identities. Remember that an important aspect of the JEE Mathematics preparation is memorizing standard formulae. Make sure you are thorough with them to avoid last-minute anxiety.
To master JEE Mathematics, all you need to do is to practice a large number of questions and you will surely perform well.
Topics which are not part of syllabus but taught in the coaching classes
Below are some topics which not part of the syllabus but it is advised that the student learns these topics because these questions can be asked in paragraph type questions. (Yes, in Paragraph type questions can be out of the syllabus considering the fact they give a paragraph which explains the concept very briefly.)
- Coordinate Geometry
- Pair of straight lines, Pole-Polar, Radical axis, Radical center, Asymptotes of a Hyperbola, the only useful property of ellipse and hyperbola is the reflection property of all tough many other properties are taught.
The partial derivative form/second form of the Leibniz differentiation rule.
- Matrices: Eigenvalues, the Characteristic equation of a matrix
- Permutations and Combinations: Pascal number
- The word stress sometimes sounds synonymous to JEE Preparations to us sometimes. You know you’re not going in the right direction if you are not stressed while preparing for JEE.
- Now, what do when you start stressing during JEE Preparations? Well, long story short – Just Relax, Chill, Take it easy. But how?
- Well, it varies from person to person. Go for walk or play your favorite sport.
- If you want, meditating or doing yoga could be a great option for anyone to de-stress. These practices are meant for relaxing people and help them focus.
- For some of you who like gaming, go grab your consoles and start playing. Other might like to read a novel, comics etc. Just do whatever you like.
- Also, please don’t switch to electronic media like Televisions, iPad etc. for relaxing. these things don’t calm your brain, but instead, make it more unstable and unfocused. Also, don’t opt for Social Media at such times.
- You should read/watch some motivational stuff, which could motivate you to get back to study, and come forward with bright colors.
At the end of the day, Stressing is something which shows that you are actually putting in a good amount of hard-work and going in the right direction. It’s just 2 years of stress, after that you’re going to have the time of your life!
