How does an ICSE student differ from a CBSE student?

In a country where Education is considered a major privilege. It in its own right has become a huge industry. In today’s time India harbours schools that are made for people coming from all kinds of social and economic background. In this race of schools the board of the school also holds prime importance. Students coming from different words have a different way or ideating things and seeing the world. There is often this distinction made between the two major boards in the country ie. ICSE and CBSE boards which provide good quality education.

India is now at the brink of major financial and infrastructural development. People are getting higher paying jobs. Our offices and lifestyle spaces are widening and becoming more plush. Amongst all this people want their family and their kids want to have the best of everything. Weather it is good housing or good education for their children. Unfortunately good quality education has now become synonymous with expensive and fancy schools in major urban cities. On one hand there are niche boards such as ICSE, IB and the IGCSE boards that believe in an all round development of kids, they are also very pricey for no reason. And on the other hand there are low grade state board and municipal run schools.

These schools are run by government bodies and are sloppy with their teaching and administration both. Hence a lot of their kids might be good at studies but lack personal skills and aren’t ready to deal with the outside world. Although the upper level schools do believe in extra curricular education with sports and other recreational activities. Many schools of other boards just stick to the books making their students very dull and orthodox towards the idea of a complete education system. Hanging somewhere in the middle are the schools of CBSE boards. They make sure they maintain the right balance, well most of the times. Some of their schools are privately run and some by the government, hence the quality might differ but the idea of education is the same.

But CBSE is considered one of the major boards by many as a very good option if the student wants to prepare for medical or do anything in the commerce stream. However ICSE is a better option for people who want to take arts or pursue engineering. That is because ICSE has a strong English and social sciences syllabus. Where they teach every subject separately and hence the student knows them to the finest detail. Whereas in CBSE all the three major sciences are clubbed together and even the social sciences are all one subject. Hence the student ends up knowing it all but in bits and pieces. So we are here to discuss as to different are ICSE students from CBSE students and what are the pros and cons of each?

Both the boards need to be examined according to their functionality, their administration routine and how their syllabus is structured and how helpful they are.

POINT OF DIFFERENCE:

  • The medium of instructions in CBSE is both Hindi and English whereas ICSE prefers on English.

  • On one hand CBSE allows regular and private candidates both to appear for their boards. Such as kids who are not even studying in non-affiliated schools can appear for their exams too. But in the case of ICSE, no student who hasn’t studied in an ICSE affiliated school is not eligible to give the final board exams.

  • CBSE has a national recognition granted by the government of India, but ICSE doesn’t share that privilege. Although both of them are internationally renowned but CBSE is a safer option when a student wants to pursue higher education within the country.

  • When it comes to the entire syllabus, CBSE helps a child prepare for national level medical and engineering exams. But that’s not the case with ICSE exams, they are very detailed in their approach and hence requires the student to remember a lot. Their places of focus are also different. CBE focuses majorly on the sciences and maths. ICSE believes in giving the child a balances education by focusing equally on arts, science and languages.

  • In the field of assessments, ICSE is very detailed, for them the internal test marks matter and are clubs with the total final score. They like focusing on lab work, students from ICSE can perhaps even make a suitable career in English literature or language.

  • Finally if the teaching styles of both have to be discussed, both the boards are trying to keep up with the changing times. Now it is more about interactive and experimental or practical learning. Now it is not just about one way teaching but about making children involved in the entire process. CBSE now doesn’t believe in a conclusive process hence not grooming their students with interpersonal skills but ICSE focuses on detailed education for each subject and also focus on the English language giving the children a Inherit sense of accomplishment and excellence.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE STUDENTS:

After conferring to the various differences that the two boards have in their basic regular functionalities. There are numerous points under which the students of these two boards can be differentiated. ICSE students are made to believe that there is a world beyond just books and education. There is a lot of emphasis given on their people’ skills through various extracurricular activities. Languages are an essential part of their syllabus which makes them more diverse in they’re thinking and approach.

But on the other hand CBSE focuses on preparing the child for various national level competitive exams. They polish the kid’s intellect for medical and engineering. But it stops over there. The child isn’t prepared for foreign universities and can do whatever he/she wishes but inside the country’s boundary. Since the board is an initiative by the government, it is designed in a way to keep the children more inclined towards the nation’s education system.

CONCLUSION:

So it completely depends on the students as to which line of education do they want to follow. There is a type and choice for everyone. And although some might argue that one is tougher than the other, it is actually based on how comfortable the child is with the kind of education being offered by the board. If the student can understand and study what is being taught then the board’s difficulty level actually shouldn’t matter at all.
